Vinland Saga: Season 2 Character development is Great

Over the course of these episodes, Thorfinn confronts the violence he has inflicted on others and realizes the futility of it all, as Askeladd's death did not bring him any peace. It's a truly remarkable moment when this former agent of death and destruction decides to dedicate his life to pacifism, and Yūto Uemura's performance is outstanding in portraying Thorfinn's transformation while also conveying the pain that drove him to this decision.
Vinland Saga continues to delve into the societal implications of violence in intriguing ways. This theme is exemplified through the comparison of Thorfinn and Olmar's stories and even in Canute's arc, as the once gentle character now embraces violence and ruthless tactics to gain power, paving his way to success atop countless corpses. The focus has now shifted to Canute's journey as much as Thorfinn's, making it captivating to witness him spiral down his own path of violence. Ultimately, this season is a tragic tale that's incredibly compelling.
Similarly, Olmar, the son of the farm's owner, has always believed that killing is a sacred and honorable ideal, and a way to demonstrate one's manhood. However, he receives a harsh reality check when he experiences the true nature of combat. This season of Vinland Saga also scrutinizes the way anime, including the show's own first season, tends to glorify violence as a spectacle.

Despite being known for its bloody battles, the team at MAPPA (which remained the same despite the change in studios) presents them in a new light this season. The battles are depicted as brutal, unforgiving, and ugly instead of exciting and thrilling. While some action scenes remain exhilarating and animated beautifully, the show's focus is not on glorifying fights or heroic warriors. Vinland Saga effectively explores the idea that there is no honor in fighting and that there is no shining Valhalla awaiting warriors. Interestingly, this season even challenges Thorfinn's view of Valhalla, portraying it as a hellish nightmare where fighters are destined to fight eternally. The show's portrayal of these ideas is more impactful and convincing than most anti-war anime.
