As a franchise, One Piece is a highly beloved and well-known manga series that made its debut on July 22nd, 1997 in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The manga has since published 969 chapters across 95 volumes, and its popularity has only grown over time. One Piece is the highest-selling manga of all time, surpassing other successful series such as Dragon Ball, Golgo 13, and Naruto, with over 462 million copies sold. It is also one of the highest-grossing fictional franchises in history, with a revenue of over $21 billion from its various mangas, films, video games, and merchandise.

As of now, Netflix has not officially announced the release date of the live-action One Piece series. However, sources suggest that the streaming platform is planning to release the series on August 31st, 2023, which is a Thursday.

Story of One Piece explained

The story of One Piece is set in an alternate version of Earth during the ‘Golden Age of Pirates,’ where fierce pirates rule the seas and compete to find the legendary treasure, ‘One Piece,’ left behind by the greatest pirate of all time, Gol D. Roger. A young boy named Monkey D. Luffy dreams of becoming the Pirate King by forming his crew and finding the treasure. He gains the power to stretch and contort his body like rubber after eating a devil fruit, giving him incredible strength and agility. Luffy sets sail from Foosha Village in East Blue when he comes of age to start his adventure and pursue his dream.

Who is behind Netflix’s One Piece series?

Tomorrow Studios, the production company behind the series, has a successful track record, having worked on projects such as Hanna for Prime Video and Snowpiercer for TNT. They are also producing Cowboy Bebop for Netflix. The showrunner for One Piece will be Steven Maeda, known for his involvement in various popular TV shows including The X Files, Lost, Lie to Me, Helix, and Day Break.

Marc Jobst, known for his work on popular Netflix series such as Daredevil, The Punisher, and The Witcher, is set to direct the first episode of One Piece.

Where is One Piece in production?

Production for the One Piece series faced significant delays due to the global pandemic. Originally scheduled to start in the summer of 2020, filming had to be pushed back several times. Currently, most of the filming is taking place at Cape Town Film Studios, which has enough space to accommodate the pirate ships used in the show. According to insiders, the production team has already built three pirate ships for the series.
