Only Up! effectively taps into the audience of streamers and viewers by offering a challenging gameplay experience where reaching the top of the map and winning the game is a notable achievement that few players accomplish. While it may not be the most polished game ever created, it elicits genuine emotions of pride or frustration depending on how far players can progress in each attempt. The game deliberately presents challenges that are not easy to overcome, and this difficulty is sometimes intentional.

The game bears a resemblance to Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, a side-scrolling game known for its frustrating mechanics, such as falling long distances and losing all progress, only to start from the beginning again. However, Getting Over It had a slightly higher level of polish upon its release, featuring clear visuals and sound design that were not as grating as in some other games.

These sequences begin with inspirational messages and then transition into music or narrative dialogue. However, the repetitive nature and grating quality of the dialogue, coupled with poor enunciation and occasional translation errors, often make it feel impersonal and fail to evoke the intended sense of inspiration.

According to the game's Steam description, it draws inspiration from the fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, with the main character named Jackie. Much of the narrative is conveyed through audio. However, as mentioned earlier, the sound of the dialogue and music, along with their triggers, didn't enhance the game experience for the player. Some even found the game more enjoyable with the sound turned off. Nevertheless, even in silence, the overall theme of the game comes through—the idea that one must persevere and keep trying after every fall in order to succeed.

The game begins on the ground in a destitute part of the town, where various objects and entire structures have been lifted into the sky, forming a large pathway. While initially disorienting, the straightforward routes become memorable over time. The player may find themselves eventually sprinting across the buildings, growing tired of cautious progress.
