The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague Plot Explained

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, a fun romantic comedy about a young man entering the workforce for the first time, is one of the less well-known anime to come out this season. But because he is related to the fabled yokai The Snow Woman, he differs from the others in some ways. The Snow Woman is credited with bringing snow to Japan in an ancient Japanese legend. Himuro, the young man, falls in love with Fuyutsuki, his cool-headed new coworker, after she offers him some hot tea on the first day of their new job, when he nearly froze over with anxiety.

The story has a straightforward slice-of-life plot with a few magical components. Along with Himuro's coworkers, there are also Komori (a descendant of the kitsune/fox spirit) and Katori (a descendant of the suzaku/phoenix). It also abuses the gender expectations that are placed on employees in the Japanese workplace. A boss like the Buddha's ancestor (their manager) sure would be nice.

Love At First Sight

If you can't already tell, Himuro has a huge crush on Fuyutsuki, and he's not very good at hiding it. Dongjue, on the other hand, is well aware of his feelings for her. Romantic comedy animated stories often use loving girls and chubby boys. But "Iceman and His Cool Colleagues" turns it around in a more realistic way. It's not that Dongyue didn't notice the feeling of the ice room, but she knew it. Usually, from a woman's point of view, it's easy to tell if a guy likes you or not. So it's not a complete twist on the "normal" "girls like guys first" trope. The Ice Room can still do his job and maintain a professional image, so his emotions don't always get in the way of his work (although his Ice powers would suggest otherwise). However, Dongyue is still the most advanced.

In the second episode, as the company retreats to Okinawa, Himuro states that the noise of the waves is disturbing him, so he worries that his snow powers might get out of hand during their visit. Fuyuki gave him a surf drum to help him get used to the sound of the waves. Later, when a heat wave hit the area, she wanted to buy him an ice cream to help cool him down.

All Couples Have Matching Sweaters

Another way in which the gender roles are reversed is in episode seven, where Katori makes outfits for herself and Otonashi. Women usually take on the role of artisans, while men do the hard work. However, the latter is actually the boss of the former. And anyway, Katori has a tendency to be a "man's wife". Unfortunately, he forgot to bring what he made, but luckily the two still managed to improvise and match the outfits. When Himuro and Fuyutsuki buy matching mugs based on her suggestion in episode 6, Fuyutsuki is confused and almost confesses his love. What he doesn't know is that not only does she feel the same way, but he has exposed himself several times just to ask her out on a date alone.

Jumping For Joy

In the first few episodes, just talking to Dongyu was enough for Himuro to monologue about how excited he is. Episode 3 The Ice Room finally took the initiative to ask for Dongjue's phone number. After texting back and forth, Fuyuki decides to ask her out to watch a movie in episode 4. As a result, Himuro couldn't sleep that night due to the tension of meeting her crush. It's definitely something we'd see with young girls in a typical high school shojo anime.
